Virgin Galactic signs Sky and Space Global to four-launch deal

PARIS — Virgin Galactic announced a contract for four launches of satellites for a planned communications constellation.

The contract, with Australian company Sky and Space Global, covers launches of multiple satellites on each of four LauncherOne missions.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Virgin Galactic has previously offered LauncherOne missions for less than $10 million each.

Speaking at the World Satellite Business Week event in Paris, officials from the two companies revealed that these flights will enable the deployment of Sky and Space Global’s initial constellation. ASX liftoff hastens Sky and Space Global’s nano satellite dream

 Sky and Space Global has a goal and promises to deliver "affordable communication services to ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME", which will "connect the four billion people currently without access to basic mobile coverage, including text messaging and voice calls".

Data speeds will be around 100kbps for mobile users, although satellite modems affixed to cars, planes, ships and buildings can, in the future, get faster speeds of between two and three megabits. See the video below for more detail.
